Breast Reconstruction

The Goal of breast reconstruction is to restore one or both breasts to normal shape, appearance, symmetry, and size following a mastectomy or partial mastectomy “lumpectomy.” Breast reconstruction often involves procedures performed in stages that typically begin at the time of the mastectomy.

Breast reconstruction generally falls into two categories:

Autologous reconstruction “flaps” (DIEP, PAP, TDAP and GAP flaps)

Implant based reconstruction

  1. Autologous reconstruction

Natural-tissue reconstruction uses tissue from your abdomen, thighs, buttocks or back. Surgeons can use various reconstruction techniques for the right candidates. The selected tissue area depends on factors such as the amount of tissue available and the patient’s preference. We will determine which option is most suitable for your individual case during your consultation.

Breast and Nipple Resensation

If you have had a mastectomy, you may miss how your breasts experienced sensation before surgery. Breast and Nipple Resensation can be performed during reconstruction to restore sensation along with the appearance of your breasts. Serving New Orleans, Dr. John Guste is one of the few surgeons in the world who can perform the revolutionary Resensation Procedure. This is a cutting-edge procedure done to help make women feel whole again.

Nipple Reconstruction

Unfortunately for some women, due to the location of their cancer, require the nipple be removed as part of their mastectomy. An absent nipple can make you feel self-conscious and insecure. Nipple reconstruction improves the look of your overall breast and will make you feel whole again.

2. Implant Based Reconstruction

Implant based reconstruction involves using a silicone or saline breast implant to reconstruct the breast. This can be done in a one stage process (Direct to Implant) or a two staged process (Tissue expanders.) Dr Guste will help you decide the best option for you based upon your anatomy, previous medical history, and what you are trying to achieve.

Our goal in this process is to make you feel whole again. You should expect to look as good if not better than before your diagnosis. That should be your expectation because that is ours. There are a lot of preconceived notions about breast cancer reconstruction that women have from stories from their mothers or grandmothers that they will look “reconstructed.” The field of Breast cancer surgery and Plastic surgery has advanced in that the cosmetic appearance of the breast is just as important in the reconstructive process as the oncologic aspect of it. You should expect to look great when this is done. Our goal is to make you feel proud and confident when you look in the mirror.
